Vital regions

A vital region flourishes here

Rural areas used to function largely independently, but these days are strongly interwoven with the urban economy. This has consequences for education, care and welfare, safety and governance. How do we keep peripheral regions vital? Together with researchers, students and businesses, at Vital Regions  we look for answers to these questions.

A vital region is a region that makes use of its own core qualities, and in this way responds to national and global developments. Within the theme of Vital Regions we search for and stimulate these core qualities. As a university of applied sciences we are part of social networks that remain strong, open and inclusive, and so are a forerunner in the glocalization.

NHL University of Applied Sciences contributes to the professionalisation of the vital region through practically-oriented research, innovation and knowledge circulation between professionals from the field, our lectorates and our own NHL degree programmes. We do this by means of top-quality research carried out in the northern region of the Netherlands, where we are strongly  established.

Strengthen vitality

The three research groups within Vital Regions focus not only on social challenges, but also on stimulating entrepreneurship and utilising core qualities. Within the lectorates, we collect, develop and  disseminate knowledge concerning the viability of education, health, safety and public affairs. The participation and inclusion of (vulnerable) groups in society such as children, young people and the growing number of the elderly form the starting point for this. In this way, we strengthen the vitality of the region.

Tickets are being sold on an internet forum for a sold-out concert of your favourite band. What luck! But once the tickets have been paid for, they disappear. This is just one of the many examples of cybercrime to which young people can fall victim. But adults and businesses can also be targets of cyber criminals.

It is expected that the safety problems on the Internet will increase in the coming years. How do we make our digital society as safe as possible? The Cybersafety lectorate responds to this question by carrying out top-quality, independent and practice-based, safety-specialised research and providing education at higher vocational and university level.

Research within the research group Vital Education is focused on learning. The first years of our lives we do nothing but learn.  But, most of us continu learning the rest of our lives. Flexibility and sustainability are becoming more and more important aspects of learning and education. The research by the research group Vital Education  will contribute to answering the question  how we can organise learning processes in the most optimal way.

“The interplay between researchers, students and work field, is what I find attractive about research at NHL. You can tell how much we can learn from each other. The most striking definition of Vital Regions was posed the other day by a student: a region you do not want to leave after your graduation. That’s how I see NHL’s contribution to a Vital Region: building a a region where you want to stay, where there are ample opportunities.”
